Healthy Eating Supports Learning
Top of Page

Our team of food and nutrition professionals is dedicated to enhancing students' ability to learn by contributing to their physical and mental well being. Studies have shown that children whose nutritional needs are met have fewer attendance and discipline problems and are more attentive in class. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals and beverages provided by the LMUSD Nutrition Program meet state and federal requirements, which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. Our students enjoy locally sourced fruits and vegetables with every meal as well as childhood favorites crafted with optimal nutrition in mind. We provide students with access to a variety of foods that meet their health and nutrition needs.

We are proud to be participating in the Harvest of the Month program through Chico State and the Center for Healthy Communities. This program provides students with locally grown, in season, fruits and vegetables to enjoy in the cafeteria and as part of nutrition education in the classroom.

What We Offer

We offer a balanced breakfast, second chance breakfast, lunch, and afterschool snack at all sites every day. Students are offered complete meals featuring whole grains, lean proteins, and a variety of fruits and vegetables at every meal service. We offer a robust salad bar at all sites and for all grades every day at lunch. Student athletes are offered high protein shakes and snacks after school to support performance and muscle growth.

Students are encouraged to build healthy eating habits by enjoying school meals that are designed according the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program which requires lower sodium, added sugar, and saturated fats than restaurant foods, as well as mindful portions.

Students still get to enjoy favorites like pizza, hamburgers, and cookies, but they are prepared with health in mind to support our community's children to grow up strong and healthy. A healthy diet does allow for all things in moderation and encourages consumption of plenty of fruits and veggies with your fun foods.

LMUSD values the flavor and quality of a home cooked meal. We strive to provide our students with meals that bring us back to our roots of using fresh ingredients and pouring love into every dish.

Kate Baker

Meet our director, Kate Little. She is a California State University Chico graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Nutrition and Food Science: General Dietetics. Prior to joining our team she managed Nutrition Departments at local healthcare facilities and developed her culinary school while working as a cook in college at a local senior home. She believes that childhood is the best time to teach and demonstrate healthy habits so that our students can grow up and continue to live healthy lives as adults. Preventing chronic illnesses starts with the lifestyle we adopt in our youth. Kate is passionate about ensuring children are able to learn without hunger distracting them. She encourages our students to try new foods and makes the cafeteria a warm and inviting place to enjoy a meal. She is always happy to hear feedback from our community and our students, please reach out to her if you have any questions.
